I haven't read the Hunger Games books, so when I watched the movie I was sooooooo angry at Katniss for being such a passive protagonist. She really doesn't do anything. Most of her problems were solved for her.
I nearly lost my mind when she refused to use her archery skills in the game, especially when she could have shot an arrow to set off the mines and destroy her enemies that took her friend, right? Also, the use of FOUR massive hound dogs to attack them at the end really annoyed me. But I had some friends explain some of the book to me and I understood some of her choices and story's purpose. Still I was annoyed.
Anywhoo, good times.
]]>You guys have to watch a low budget film called, ThanksKilling. It's on the top of my guilty pleasure lists. My buddy and I discovered it on Netflix during a drinking binge night and we hail it as the greatest terrible movie ever and we can't stop watching it. A horror movie about a killer Turkey that comes out every 500 years to kill on Thanksgiving. Even the math and motive doesn't make sense; the turkey has a Jersey accent. We quote that film all the time and I promise it will change your life!
Isn't Nicholas Cage's career a guilty pleasure, along with Michael Bay's career?
Pitch Perfect is the top of my current list now. I saw it in the theater on my 31st birthday last december and sang along to every song in the movie. The plot is ridiculous and predictable but I loved every moment of it!
]]>That's because ours was about good chick flicks. :)Sent from my iPhone
]]>haha! Damn, my friend would murder you. But I agree. I could never get through P&P, but oddly I did enjoy the Matthew Mcfayden film adaptation with Kiera. Say what you want about the Brontes but I loooove Wuthering Heights and I would argue it's an erotic thriller.
True story, I saw the Princess Diaries in the theater opening weekend and bought the soundtrack. No shame. Mandy Moore was in it and I adore her.
And I can't believe you guys didn't have Sex and the City 1, 2, (and was there a 3rd?) on your lists. I was dragged to the first one and actually wept a little at the end. I mean, they're terrible, but the show and the movies have a female religious following.
]]>Lol John. I realized my Bronte/Austen mixup after we recorded. Heat of the moment. As for your Austen aficionado, warn them that the last time I was in a room with a Pride and Prejudice lover, it was my honors lit teacher at Ohio State. I convinced her that the youngest daughter was a lesbian because, and I quote, “she always had her nose in a book and that's clearly a reverse phallic symbol for a vagina.” The Austenophile nearly broke into tears marveling at my insight. Meanwhile, I thought the book was yet another attempt to romanticize fake romance via a group of daughters with little to no personality who all felt entitled to love, yet still went for the wrong men. End rant. :)Sent from my iPhone
]]>B) Seriously, Matt? Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte, not Jane Austen. But I really wanna hear your rant against all things Jane Austen then put you in a room with one of my friends, who is a lit major and Austen enthusiast. 😉
Carry on…
]]>Mr. John, you make some great points. Moneyball is a really well done flick that makes a topic that is literally and metaphorically “inside baseball” both compelling and entertaining. League of Their Own is great, but it couldn’t quite beat the Sandlot for me. Ducks was never my thing. Any Given Sunday I find to be a little ridiculous. lol
Titans is good, but Friday Night Lights blows it out of the water, and was VERY close to making it on my list (and one of the only GREAT MOVIES that became a GREAT SHOW…maybe the only…other than MASH?). The Natural is a little hokey to me. And my hokey slot was filled by Field of Dreams. 🙂
LADY BUGS! Hysterical. My college roommate and I watched that movie about 50 times during school. Immensely watchable flick. Victory was another one that we watched a few times in college, back when I was a more active Arsenal fan. Air Up There? Really? That one and Any Given Sunday are your weak links. I bet you can think of ten sports flicks WAY better. Hahah.
I’m curious with 42…I’ve read VERY mixed things about it. I’m hoping it’s along the lines of Seabiscuit…a very NICE movie. Not a great film…but an enjoyable flick. That’s still a SLIGHT disappointment to me though, because I think Aaron’s story could be a lot grittier and honest. I don’t know if Spike Lee’s idea would have gone TOO FAR in that direction, and sensationalized it…but I think there’s a version of that film closer to Spike’s approach that’s more what I’d be looking for.
]]>MONEYBALL
A League of Their Own
Any Given Sunday
MIGHTY DUCKS!!!!
Remember The Titans (gotta represent my peeps)
Friday Night Lights (the drama show was probably better. One of the BEST PILOTS EVER)
THE NATURAL!!!! (My dad introduced me to that film when I was a boy playing in the Little League Minors…in Forth Walton Beach, Florida. Fantastic.)
Lady Bugs
Victory. (Starring Stallone as the American goalkeeper, Michael Cain, and it even had PELE, one of the World's greatest "proper" footballers. Im an English Football fan so that film meant a lot.)
Seabiscuit
However, having The Sandlot , Air Up There, and Hoosiers on your list redeems you a little. Hoosiers brought me to tears; that scene where Gene Hackman brings them into a huddle toward the end and says, "I love you guys." I get teary eyed.
And I'm gonna predict that 42 will be at the top of my list. It's such an important story and think it's gonna be badass. Maybe they'll do one on Hank Aaron later. I'd love to see a film about the first black hockey player too cause I've been curious about that.
Well, looking forward to a little racism and TV talk on the next episode! Haha;)
